Benefits

Maca has been eaten in the Andes for centuries, traditionally to enhance energy and stamina, and it helps support mood, vitality and overall wellness. The root carries protein, fibre and minerals, along with macamides and macaenes, compounds particular to the plant. The research is still young, so we keep the claims where the tradition puts them.

Ingredients

Pure Organic Maca Root Powder (Lepidium meyenii). Sourced from certified organic supplier. Produced in a facility that may contain gluten, soya, nuts and seeds. Seasonal variation in taste, texture and colour may occur.

Feel the difference of a truly healthy morning.

Maca grows where very little else will, and it's been eaten as food long before anyone called it a superfood.

Raw, which means barely touched

Most maca on the shelf is gelatinised: heated until the starch breaks down. Ours isn't. It's dried and milled, and that's the extent of it. Gelatinised maca is gentler on some stomachs. Raw maca is the root closer to how it came out of the ground.

Grown at 4,000 metres

Maca grows on the Andean plateau, in thin air, hard frost and poor soil. Very little else survives up there. That's the plant Peruvians have been eating for centuries, and it's the only place it comes from.

Food first, not a supplement

Maca isn't a capsule or an extract. It's a vegetable, dried and ground. A teaspoon in a smoothie is closer to adding an ingredient than taking a supplement.

HOW TO USE

Start with less than you think.

Maca is earthy and slightly malty, and stronger than people expect. A teaspoon is a real amount.

  1. Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons (3 to 5g) daily into smoothies, coffee, oatmeal or baking. Begin at one and give it a week.
  2. The malty note suits anything already sweet or nutty. It goes well with cocoa, banana and oats. It doesn't suit plain water.
  3. It bakes well too, holding its flavour through heat.

Common questions

How much should I use?

One to two teaspoons (3 to 5g) daily. Start at one. The flavour is strong and it's easy to overdo on the first try.

What does it taste like?

Earthy and malty, a little like butterscotch with the sweetness taken out. It suits cocoa, banana, coffee and oats. Seasonal variation in taste, texture and colour may occur, since this is a crop rather than a formula.

Is this raw or gelatinised maca?

Raw. Gelatinised maca is heated to strip out the starch, which makes it easier on sensitive stomachs. Ours is dried and milled, nothing more.

Does maca contain hormones?

No. Maca has no hormones and no plant oestrogens in it, and it doesn't change hormone levels in the body. It has been used traditionally to support energy and stamina, and how it works isn't fully understood.

Is there anyone who shouldn't take it?

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have a thyroid condition or a hormone-sensitive condition, talk to your doctor before starting. The same goes if you're on regular medication.
